I might be WAY overthinking this, but I made a weird connection after re-watching the pilot.
Lin explains that his ancestor's purpose for founding the school was to give the oppressed peasants of the world a way to fight back against their masters. That's sounds REALLY "Communist-like" to me. Though they're also really hypocritical because they take in neo-nazis, and the "Preppies" are all CIA kids.
Then, I remembered that the main character was supposed to be Nicaraguan, and hated Ronald Reagan, and something clicked for me:
In real life in the 80's, there was supposedly a US military run "school of assassins" for anti-communist Central American death squads. It was called the "School of the Americas":
So, I think I've kind of figured out what Kings Dominion was meant to be. It's a fantasy of a Communist counter-"School of the Americas" assassin school, except for teenagers from around the world. That would explain why the story is set during the Cold War, and the main character is Nicaraguan.
But when Lin explains his reasons for his first kill, it was entirely about revenge. He kills the DUI Truck driver first, hardly an example of oppression. I guess they're pointing out that the whole idea of a school of assassins will inevitably just devolve into "might makes right" in the end no matter who is behind it.
