There could be an interesting battle brewing for the most lucrative fight date of year. Following Saturday's victory over Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that he planned to return on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 2nd. Mayweather has fought on the holiday weekend three out of the last four years.

Now Mayweather is facing serious opposition for the date. Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has ordered his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, to secure the May date for his first fight of 2015. Golden Boy is hoping Canelo's first fight of 2015 will come against WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

"I have orders from Canelo. He wants to fight on May [2] and I, as his promoter, have to get him a fight on these dates [that he requests]," De La Hoya said.

Canelo will first return in December, likely against Joshua Clottey. Cotto will first in early 2015. Unless Mayweather gets an interesting opponent like Manny Pacquiao or Amir Khan, Canelo will make a run for that date. It also may cause an interesting internal promotional conflict if Mayweather decides on Khan, who is Canelo's Golden Boy stablemate.

Floyd has made his money but he wants his way then he will have to bite the bullet and make the pacquiao fight. at least he will be the a-side. i mean if money is important to him then he has to do pacquiao if not then whatever.

Okay if he fights cotto on cinco de mayo he's good. But then what happens in September fight GGG?
I don't think going up against Floyd without a very marketable fight is a good idea personally.

Seems like all the rumors are leading that way. De La Hoya continues to "build" his relationship with Arum and it is said DLH wants to mend fences with HBO and secure more distribution, in case Haymon power plays him out of Showtime.
Outside of Floyd-Manny and Floyd-Canelo 2, this may be the biggest fight to be made. You would have to think HBO and Showtime would at least try to work out a way to make this fight...Cotto has said he will be loyal to HBO and won't toss them to the bushes.

Boxing as a sport needs to make this fight happen. It is a fantastic matchup and is great for the fans. As fans we deserve it and it would be a shame if network/promoter beefs held it up.
