One question asked at the DC panel today at the Kapow comic convention in London, was about DC co-publisher Dan DiDio’s interview with The Advocate. Specifically over the decision not to change any character’s sexual orientation when relaunching the DC Universe. At the time Dan stated they would introduce new LGBT characters rather than switch orientation, but the question asked why DC would switch race, size, age, all sorts of identifying features, but not orientation.

Surprisingly, Dan stated that they had changed DC’s policy in this regard. And they are about to reintroduce a previously existing DC character who was previously straight and now will be “one of our most prominent gay characters.”

As Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne explained, just like the President of the United States, the co-publisher’s policy on this “has evolved.”

And despite his best efforts to stem Dan’s wandering mouth, we also got the very strong impression that the death of Superman of Earth Two many not have been as final as portrayed…

Man, what's up with all this gay shyt in comics lately? It seems that in every other issue of the X-Titles, some dudes are kissing on panel. I don't need to see that shyt!

i think the thing that bothers me about this is that they're going to switch the orientation of a character. it would make more sense to introduce another character rather than decide to give an old one a new orientation. but i guess they're worried about it catching on. with this move, people that already were fans of the existing character probably would stay fans even with the change but if they created a new character all together, they'd have to worry about building a fan base for that character, which would be difficult considering the fact they're trying to make the character LGBT friendly.

my real question is, are they doing this out of a sense of morality or trendy economics?

I also feel that a new character would be more appropriate. If you are a big fan of an original character, you don't want to see such a drastic change.

:rudy: DC

Also, if this was really about acceptance, they will make that gay character talk and act very feminine. But we all know they will make him a manly guy who just happens to be gay but that will never actually be seen with another man or doing anything gay.

Or copout # 2...make a female character a lesbian since they know 99% of male comic book readers wouldn't give a shyt.

This is all about being able to tell the media and gay activists "look, there's a gay character...now leave us alone."

Waste of everyone's time.

I was reading Flash the other day and they're reintroducing that Pied Piper guy, who's been gay for the longest. It'll have something to do with him I bet
