Some of these countries are rich in natural resources as well as population, but economical and governmental instability - for which the US and allies are responsible for some - leads to migration, brain and manpower drain - which keeps these countries in a perennial state of not moving forward (at least not as quickly as they could) - and allows them to be exploited by western powers, as well as China. Corruption is also rife and their politicians will sell the whole country for a few more 00s in their bank accounts.
