I could see dude being miserable to be around, angry, and even verbally abusive, but that's not rape.

It actually is a form of it. Rape isnt only considered a black and white forceful sexual attack anymore. Coercion into "consent" is considered rape too. So use of power or influence, threats and emotional manipulation are all considered rape nowadays.
