These countries have the wealth that India does? I'm asking because I honestly don't know not trying to prove anything. I guess I'm speaking relative to population size.

As I understand it, the problem in India (and these other places) is more infrastructural than wealth-related. I was reading a UN report on this, which is where I got that claim from. I'll try and dig it up. The argument was basically that if money was channeled into these public infrastructure projects, the problem would pretty much disappear, but currently there's corruption and general apathy towards the condition of the poor that's preventing it. Closed sewers and simple toilets aren't really that expensive, from what I know.

Everywhere in the third world is pretty much like this. Go anywhere from Jamaica and Trinidad to Kenya to Oman to India to Mongolia to Laos. About 1/3 of the world's population doesn't even have access to a toilet.

As a man, you'd probably be fine. No need to get all reactionary and outlandish about it. Obviously most poorer countries are more dangerous than the developed West, but you'd have to be needlessly cowardly to let that prevent you from making a visit, especially if you're not a woman.

Your personal preference isn't the issue though. Not everybody is built for third world travel, which is understandable. India sure as hell isnt a country you to go kick back and relax, a simple train or bus ride from one state to another can be an experience you'll never forget....negative or positive depending on the person.
