i dont think people are mad that he doesnt speak on our behalf. its that he doesnt speak on his own behalf. hes british as well as black is he not? he recognizes how hard it is being a black actor in the uk, he takes roles about the diffuclties of being black in the us, yet, he doesnt want to talk about what it means being black in this world. why?

But then many here would just claim that that racism in the US is worse than racism in the UK so he doesn't fully understand racism. I think that was the general consensus in the Samuel L. Jackson thread about Kaluuya.

Also, he has spoken about the difficulties being a black man from the UK in the past. It doesn't mean he needs to talk about it in every single interview.

UK racism is very different to US racism..

You can live in the UK, and not notice it thinking people are just 'stuck up' then land in the US for the first time and get hit in the face with a sledge hammer of racism.

This is not true.

No one outside of the uk would know this dude until he started taking race based roles is the point. He didn’t gain international acclaim until he played African American roles centered on race yet he’s bored of the race discussion is why his comments are being critiqued.
How do you know they're African American roles? Because they have an accent? If I had a child in USA is my child African American?

True but not true, go live in the Highlands of Scotland and tell me you don't notice the full force of racism, but if you live in London you may not.

In part it is true

He said that black people in the UK can go about without noticing racism. I do not know a single grown black person who hasn't experienced some type of racism.

From shopkeepers keeping an eye on you when you walk into a store, to being stop and searched by the police to straight up being called a n***er, it definitely exists.

These entertainment negroes today are wired differently. Most ain't built for the struggle. Decadent veil, it is what it is.

I know as artists they just want to be judged by their work and their talent but this world ain't colorblind. We don't exist in a vacuum where the history of racism and oppression didn't exist.

This is lies.
Back in the day your so called tough entertainers turned to booze and drugs.
They just had extraordinary pr teams to mask it

I LOVE when my white co-workers ask me about race everyday at work and dont view this as them being passive aggressive at all!

they have no understanding of the affect of slavery and count on me to remind them everyday! that brings me true joy

I am happy that they view my singular self as an outlet for their curiosity and pity for my whole race.

this c00n should be honored when white people (who have no clue) ask him what it means to be black!

I know many black entertainers in the early 20th century went through phases of "I just want to be known as an artist not just the black artist" and had struggles. Many went to Europe because it was perceived as less racist and they believed they could reach their full potential there.

But for the most part they acknowledged the struggle and many did speak out on black issues because it was much more overt then and they had no illusions about being in a "post-racial" society.

Yeah you're right

There's no black person in any white country that hasn't had racism

Yall must not have been that kid who had questions that were obvious to you asked by people who werent black. Or hell, imagine being black when OJ was acquitted and your white coworkers ask questions cause you happen to be there. Don’t be like that, fam. It doesn't take much intelligence to see why he said that. They always asking him about race related questions, many of which im positive he doesn't even know much about when asked.

edit:sidenote:patrice:his choice in roles kinda asks for it. Dude who made “Birth of a Nation” couldnt realistically say “why we talmbout that” when his movie very overtly covers the subject of race.

See, I was that kid and I did not have knowledge of self. Bombarded with crazy ass questions that a ten year wouldn't even know where to begin.

So it was a struggle because I was unprepared and it just left me frustrated. Only thing that changes as you get older is your knowledge.

Even with the knowledge, you realize you end up having to explain your own existence. Guess a lot of folks here don't work with too many white folk on the reg. I get tired of it.

However, he keeps choosing roles that have to do with Race and the African American experience so I can see why folks would be angry coming from that angle.

It's one of those statements that he should have prepared in advance. Off the cuff, he comes off unaware and willfully ignorant.
