The direct warnings to Mr. Bush about the possibility of a Qaeda attack began in the spring of 2001. By May 1, the Central Intelligence Agency told the White House of a report that “a group presently in the United States” was planning a terrorist operation. Weeks later, on June 22, the daily brief reported that Qaeda strikes could be “imminent,” although intelligence suggested the time frame was flexible.

But some in the administration considered the warning to be just bluster. An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day.

In response, the C.I.A. prepared an analysis that all but pleaded with the White House to accept that the danger from Bin Laden was real.

I just re-read the August 6 PDB a few days ago and I kinda could see why it seems more like an overview/ongoing briefing.. this article says that Bush specifically asked for an overview (i.e. that briefing) after not being convinced by more specific, imminent briefings

Honestly, I came across a few articles that said, the executive branch knew an attack was coming. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, the U.S. probably gets threaten by domestic and international terrorists, everyday B. I doubt, they took this attack seriously, and understood the severity.

That has always been one of the most things in politics to me. How does the worst terrorist attack ever on U.S. soil happen on your watch and you get credit for "keeping us safe" just because it didn't happen again?

yeah and while clinton was in office osama bin laden was poppin off at the mouth as well, both republicans and dems are to blame shyt people

the planning on 9/11 started on clinton's watch....which is why i say both are to blame because clinton could have done a whole lot more but no one blames him because he is the "greatest"

if you'll remember there was some random dude on there that was pretty specific in what he was saying about attacking and such. I always assumed "someone" looked into that but perhaps it would have been more prudent to send that to...someone.

But yeah i remember that shyt and every 9/11 it makes me wonder. Ol dude (i cannot remember his screen name as he was pretty new) was VERY angry and very aggressive in what he was saying. I mean he literally was like "yeah there's an attack coming in the next few months DIE DIE DIE."

you can't stop domestic terror bruh, not all of it at least. It's the price we pay for freedom. ALl it takes is one nut with a little bit of resolve and damage can be done. Short of assigning 1/2 the country to watch the other half there is literally no way it can all be stopped. That doesn't mean you don't try though.

I worked in the intel branch for 2ID in Korea and I swear to God, the day of and before we kept getting these warnings from different intel agencies about beefing up our security and possibly raising our THREATCON due to something imminent...there's nothing anyone can tell me that they didn't know that this was going to happen
