I am fluent in American Sign Language and I was watching like "umm... He's not saying anything at all, sooo..." I laughed (a lot) at your post because I can only imagine how he managed to get up there to "interpret." But as far as his behavior, it's not funny. Deaf and hard of hearing people really do depend on sign language to communicate. So it is disrespectful to get up there and pretend.

Hell, when I couldn't talk while I was intubated in ICU, I communicated with 2 of my siblings who are also fluent in ASL, and they were able to talk to our parents, the nurses and doctors for me. It's sort of a hidden language, but it's come in handy for us several times!
