Just watched this at an advanced screening. This is my movie of the year so far. it doesn’t feel like 3 hours (it’s 189 mins total), due to the nonstop fukkery, debauchery, and shifting between the characters storylines. I don’t want to spoil it much, but I highly recommend it.

I went into it blind knowing nothing and definitely had a great time. I’ll leave a quick synopsis below for others who need some background info

If I had to describe it to someone, I’d say that it’s an ode to cinema through the lens of various players of the 1920s silent film era scene (a star, a nobody, a rising star, and a background player). You navigate each persons careers as advancements occur through Hollywood (the talkies), and see where it takes them.

The two standouts are easily Diego Calvo (who was in attendance at the screening and did a Q&A after) and Jovan Adepo. They played their roles perfectly, and stole every scene that they were in? Especially Calvo. I expect an Oscar nomination for him, Pitt, Chazelle, and Robbie. Give this film a try, especially if you’re a cinema fan, Damien Chazelle hasn’t missed yet!

Tobey fukking McGuire :russ: dude played his small role perfectly
Seen it earlier this month. My thoughts here^

The critics are giving this bad reviews. Is it going to be divisive?
100%. It’s gonna be a love it or hate it film. Some people will think it’s too over the top, while others will enjoy the spectacle for what it is and be thoroughly entertained throughout its run time. You’ll likely find where you stand in the first 30 minutes lol

I'm going to see first week or first day, but is going to be a major example of a movie that just won't work anymore, in terms of budget/promo/ROI.

An incomprehensible trailer, for a common/casual movie goer, a movie star, Brad Pitt, who isn't enough anymore, and a December release. That's just my feeling.

I am hoping it's dope, seen at least 5 really good movies last month or so

On top of that it's premiering a week after the sequel of the highest grossing movie of all time.
This is a bad roll out already

I’d give Paramount the benefit of the doubt after the year they just had, but that’s just me. They seem to be confident in this one if they’re already offering first-look deals to Chazelle.

This shyt was dope as fukk for the most part. If the trailers weren’t any indication, the movie does not shy away from being raunchy as fukk.

The negative reviews don’t surprise me though. That third act sticks out like a sore thumb. You can tell Chazelle clearly loves this time period and you’re either immersed into the debauchery or rolling your eyes thinking how much more self-indulgent can this get, lol. I loved it though.

The dialogue and performances makes me question those who thinks it’s Amsterdam 2.0. It didn’t feel like anyone phoned it in. That multi-take scene at the Soundstage in particular is an all-timer.

Samara Weaving looked like 2006 Eva Green in this. :noah: I was genuinely confused for a solid bit.

I thought it was hilarious how
Damien included a shot of the Na’vi tribe at the end, whose franchise is dominating the box office as we speak. Man simply gives no fukks. :lolbron:

That whole montage at the end felt like something Kubrick or Malick would do.

Most of the camera-work and scene transitions reminded me of PTA’s earlier films. shyt, I thought the sequence with Tobey Maguire’s character was going to play out the same exact way as Molina’s character in Boogie Nights at first. Manny even bugging out mid-convo just like Wahlberg. Instead of the firecrackers though, we end up with spitting and Bane munching down rats. :mjlol:
