Zay was just early. Probably around 2018 or so is when Dallas hip hop really got mainstream traction, and its been up from there. I'd make the argument that Dallas is at the very least a regional hip hop capital now, and it wasn't that, 10+ years ago...

I'd also say that Dallas has one of the stronger and more culturally unique sounds around, and while they don't have Houston's longevity or the top level icons Houston has, Dallas has a deep ass bench of listenable artists, probably moreso than Houston. Like if you think about it, today in 2025:

•Dallas scene is more relevant than Houston's
•Dallas scene has overtaken Memphis and New Orleans in contemporary relevance

And its really owed to Shawn Cotton's rise and his place within the industry and genre. But Dallas hip hop is a real factor, I'm a huge fan. They've got a lot of fire rappers...

Sauce Walka might be the most toxic factor in hampering Houston’s scene IMO
