I always assumed the INTENT was to promote unity prior to a potentially divisive athletic competition. In theory, a "Hey enjoy the competition, but we're still all together as Americans" kinda thing. Fans can be extreme so ideally something to keep them grounded.


The other event types that you described don't have any sort of competitive atmosphere that would pit fans/players against each other.
