A father's attempt to teach his son a lesson for taking his truck without permission ended in tragedy Monday after a local police officer shot the teenager dead.

James Comstock told the Des Moines Register he called the police on his son Tyler after the latter took the former's truck in retaliation for refusing to buy him cigarettes.

Ames Police Officer Adam McPherson reportedly spotted the lawn care company vehicle and pursued it onto the Iowa State University campus, where a brief standoff ensued after Tyler allegedly refused orders to turn off the engine.

McPherson eventually fired six shots into the truck, two of which struck Tyler who was later pronounced dead.

The official report claims the action was necessary in order "to stop the ongoing threat to the public and the officers."

Tyler's dad says he was unarmed at the time.

"So he didn't shut the damn truck off, so let's fire six rounds at him?" exclaimed Gary Shepley, Tyler's step-grandfather. "We're confused, and we don't understand."

James said his son had his fair share of minor troubles with the law, and was distraught over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, but was in the process of turning his life around, and was working on obtaining his GED at Des Moines Area Community College.

"He was a smart kid. He made his own computers. He was interested in IT," James told the Register.

The family's demands for answers got even louder following the revelation that a member of the Ames police department suggested twice that officers call off the chase.

"He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him," James said. ""It was over a damn pack of cigarettes."

McPherson is currently on paid leave pending the results of his department's investigation.

Wow, sad story. To think if that young man had obeyed his father and honored him more, he'd still be alive.

backstory?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Sammy_Yatim
On the night of July 27, Sammy Yatim boarded a Dundas streetcar. Sometime afterwards, he drew his knife and told passengers to remain on the streetcar, reportedly acting aggressively towards other passengers.[3] Fearing for their lives, the passengers promptly tried to escape. Yatim then revised his demands, ordering everyone off the streetcar. He began to approach the driver of the vehicle but stopped to shout obscenities at the crowd gathering outside. The driver of the streetcar remained at the controls until shortly before police arrived.[4]

Passenger and witness Aaron Li-Hill said that upon boarding the streetcar he initially noticed Yatim sitting at the back, across from a group of teenage girls.[4] He later heard giggling from the back of the streetcar followed by a scream, then saw Yatim brandishing a knife as the girls ran past him toward the front doors.[4] According to witness Jessica Doyle, another passenger on the streetcar, Yatim seemed irate, mentally unstable, and oblivious to her presence as he walked directly past her aboard the streetcar.[5] Doyle reported that as he walked past her, Yatim was holding his exposed genitals in his left hand and a knife in his right hand.[5] According to Melody Garcia, another passenger, Yatim "took his penis out with one hand and a knife in another, threatening four girls and all the lives of people on that bus."[4]

Police arrived at the scene. At the front of the vehicle, Constable James Forcillo of the Toronto Police Service called for a Taser multiple times, believing the situation "could be contained".[3] According to videos of the incident, police asked Yatim to drop the knife and warned him not to "take one step in this direction". Nine shots were subsequently fired by police; three initially, followed by an additional six about five seconds later. Approximately 30 seconds later, a Taser was deployed on Yatim[3] by a second officer.[6]

It was later determined that eight of the nine shots fired hit Yatim

Very tragic story. Imagine how horrible the father feels.

"So he didn't shut the damn truck off, so let's fire six rounds at him?" exclaimed Gary Shepley, Tyler's step-grandfather. "We're confused, and we don't understand."

I hate to bring race into it, but this is all too common with black folk. We damn sure aint surprised.
