The level design is pretty unremarkable going on that video.

As an introductory stage? With the enemy placement (How it places the walking sunflowers to chase after you to make you wanna move forward, introduces different enemies in relatively safe environments before throwing more and more at you while some of the jumps get relatively trickier)?

I liked it. It's pretty damn good for 1:25 second level. It pushed you forward, organically, while giving you plenty of space to see how different enemies react to your shots, how they attack, and mixing it all together to give you a decent challenge.

Nah that video was unimpressive. Looked like a Contra clone meets a 1950s Mickey Mouse cartoon.
That's the point, but if you watch the videos explaining the game play, it's much deeper than Contra. The visual style is groundbreaking. Everyone is worried about pushing polygons, and they're taking 2D to new heights. This is where Disney type games would have went if they had more imagination and skill.

When the game was first announced, it was supposed to be all Boss fights.

Then as people complained about the lack of platforming levels they decided to add some in.

They've already said these types of levels will not be the focus of the game, and it shows. I don't expect the platforming levels to be that good as they are an add on late in the development cycle.

The best part of the game will be the boss levels and set piece stuff like this
