Before Trump, we had a deficit with Europe with single digit tariffs in place. What effect do you think zero tariffs will have on that trade imbalance? The trade balance will remain largely the same. So what purpose is served with tanking the economy only to end up where you were with trade deficits?
Trumps fails to understand that tariffs are not the sole or biggest cause of trade deficits because they were already very low. He thinks he can strong arm the rest of the world into buying American products and that’s not the way it works.
Let’s say you need to buy a diamond ring, you can’t go to the jeweler and demand that he buy something from you before you purchase the diamond ring. That’s a simple example of what he is trying to do and is specifically what he is doing with Lesotho’s diamond trade with the U.S.
