You're not protecting your home with a 22, you'll just have a personal injury suit on your hands

You don't want a 40, that'll penetrate walls

If you're a good shooter, you won't have to worry about the walls....

I see it like this, if you want a gun just to protect you in your home get a .22 or lower caliber pistol. Unless you plan to shoot to kill, the survival rate of an intruder is more likely than a higher caliber pistol but your target will be subdued. The .40 series pistols have a lesser chance of survival and will create a bit of a bloody mess as well as do a little damage to your house. Get a .50 and I promise you that not only will you f**k up your house, if you hit your target...... if the impact doesn't kill the intruder, they will bleed to death before they receive medical attention.

In some states it's open season on an intruder, in other states you need to prove your life was threatened before you use lethal force . . in Texas it's your life or your property but in California you may have trouble with a 50 caliber it's hard to prove you didn't have "malicious intent"

What you want is a 357 that can load 38s, which are perfect for protecting your home. With a 22 I feel like you run of chance of not taking the intruder down and we shouldn't be assuming he's be unarmed. With a 40 caliber from close range a bullet could travel through his body and the next wall. Load .357 if you're legally allowed to carry outside of your home (with my lifestyle, I don't see a need to be armed outside the home)
