24-year-old with no underlying health conditions dies 12-days after COVID-19 symptoms

DETROIT
– It’s been an absolute nightmare for Denise and Robert Hirschmann. Their son Ben Hirschmann’s life was cut short at the age of only 24 because of coronavirus (COVID-19).

In 24 years, his reach went far as a proud American, heavily involved in the Republican Party and just one of the many lives cut short, by this pandemic.

“You go into shock and you become completely immobilized by the fact that this is not a dream this is the worst nightmare of a parent’s life,” Denise Hirschmann said.

A cough, fever, achiness, Ben's doctor would apparently call it a cold over video chat appointments and prescribe cough medicine.

His doctor, like most right now isn’t seeing patients in person.

“How would I ever know that the next day my son would be dead,” Hirschmann said.

Day 12 and no relief, last Tuesday Ben woke and said he wanted to go to the hospital, his mom Denise called 911.

“I got him out into the living room sat him down and he coded, his eyes went into the back of his head and I started CPR EMS got here they could not revive,” she said.

His dad, a retired Roseville Police Officer, and two-time cancer survivor couldn't believe it.

It’s just sad having been in this situation as an officer way too many times dealing with death no fun being on the other side,” he said.

The Hirschmann's say the medical examiner confirmed Ben died of acute pneumonia brought on by COVID-19.

“Just the loss of a son or a daughter like that just leaves a hole that will never be filled,” Robert Hirschmann said.

Over the course of 12 days, Ben Hirschmann was in constant communication with his doctor via teleconferencing. Time after time he was reassured that he would be all right.

“She told him she was sure it wasn’t the virus, she would not allow him to be tested she would not allow him to go to the ER,” Denise Hirschmann said.

Sadly, Ben Hirschmann was never able to be tested or treated -- a move his parents believe could have saved his life if the virus was detected.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that if you could have seen her in person. She would have picked up on all these things,” Robert Hirschmann said.

Robert Hirschmann started to feel symptoms and even with history of a heart attack, pneumonia and finding out his son was COVID-19 positive, the 55-year-old was still unable to get tested. Eventually he was diagnosed.

The couple is now hoping and praying for some type oversight to make sure that those who actually need to be tested and treated can actually do just that.

“The pain is undefinable. It is, it’s past that it’s permanent and it’s forever, but you know it’s it’s made worse by the fact that was some photos that he was a healthy young man reached out to his doctor on several occasions and he was not allowed to be treated,” Denise Hirschmann said.

If there was any type of good news that could come out of this, Local 4 has been told a senator is creating a bill in Ben Hirschmann’s name that will prevent what happened to him from happening to someone else.

To the we have to open crowd. You do realize any business that operates on thin margins is going belly up once things are opened up and the government checks are gone, right? Restaurants can't stay open if you cut their capacity by 70%. Movie theaters only make money when lots of people buy snacks. Even the airlines can't operate if you remove over half the seats.

Govern Florida and fail to understand how the National Basketball Association governs itself brehs

Be an asshat Governor, brehs.

Let the Ghost of Imaginary White Jesus govern your state policy, brehs

Only the dumbest of the dumb people will be sitting up in a stadium right now.

I was on a half full flight for work before lockdown started so people were already making economic decisions when this shyt first started. So many flights were getting canceled and people reporting planes being barely full. So, now while we are in the middle of it, they aren't going to fill seats like they did before.

I mean, if you could depict an imaginary old white man in the sky and a mass of vice-riddled people below him personifying dumb hubris, that could/should be the state flag. So...if any state, :yeshrug::manny:
