Probably the most viable opponent in or around the division that was available for that date.

Has GGG or his camp ever said if he was open to fighting Cotto at a catchweight btw?
GGG has said he will go as low as 154 for the right fight. I don't think he would go to 154 for Cotto...I think he wants Cotto's belt and lineal moniker...157 would work.

Geale vs. Cotto is a solid scrap. It isn't exciting on paper, but Geale is a top 10 MW and is natural at that weight class. I would still consider Cotto the favorite as he is more talented.

But, Canelo is not draining Kirkland down...it's 1lb above the Junior Middleweight Limit and it's not for a Championship.

We have the Lineal Middleweight Champion Of The World defending the WBC/RING Championship against a natural middleweight......3 lbs below the actual weight limit of Middleweight.

It's not the same:yeshrug:

But Kirkland is a MW. nikka walks around at 200+.

Also Cotto isn't the MW champion to me. It's GGG.

I'm sure GGG is happy about being the Harlem Al Middleweight Champion of the world, but he and the rest of the world put just a bit more value in The RING and Linear championship, about to be contested in a fight between two middleweights...at 157lbs :beli:

Geale is a damn good fighter and a dangerous opponent for Cotto, draining the man 3lbs is just another chapter in the debacle that has been Cotto as MW champ.

Everyone's rage/blame is misplaced though. We should all be :pacspit: at Sergio Martinez & Lou Dibella for setting us up with this bullshyt MW situation. Maravilla railed against fake champs being careful & ducking him for nearly his entire career. He hated JCC Jr for being handed the belt and not taking on the toughest competition. Then he gives a MW shot to Cotto, a JMW that was entirely undeserving, knowing he had one leg to stand on. And this is coming from a Maravilla stan.

I can't even blame Cotto for ducking GGG because we all knew the Maravilla fight was a way to get a belt and get him back into contention for a Canelo fight. And honestly, I think if the money is right and Cotto gets past Canelo, he could be convinced to take GGG…at a catchweight.

I don't blame Sergio for taking on Cotto. Cotto's one of the biggest draws in boxing, so he stood to make more money than he's ever made in his career. Plus it's a nice name to add on his resume. :yeshrug:

Eh, the Sergio fight was more for legacy IMO. It had nothing to do with Canelo. Remember, Cotto was offered 10 mil to fight Canelo, and turned in down to fight Sergio. Win or lose, the Canelo fight would always be on the table

You're right that legacy was a big part of the equation, and without context, adding the true lineal MW champ's name to Cotto's resume is big. But it absolutely had something to do with Canelo. The Trout fight was just a way to position himself for Canelo. And Cotto couldn't fight Canelo coming off a loss. If that was the case then they would've fought after the Floyd loss. That's why it's been pushed back so much. So Cotto needed a good win to make himself a viable opponent for Canelo. Maybe the Rodriguez fight was enough for Canelo, but the Maravilla fight gave him many options and a lot of leverage with Canelo. It took a fight Canelo wanted badly and turned it into that plus a shot at the lineal MW title. Before Cotto would be just a notch in Canelo's belt, now he'll be the biggest bullet point on his resume. Cotto's camp thought, correctly, that Maravilla was shot, and saw all the benefits that came from the easier fight. The legacy was a big piece, but wasn't the biggest.
