Coronavirus Updates: NY's Positivity Rate Goes Down, But Hospitalizations Rise

Rose Rosenberg, a Borough Park resident walking through the neighborhood without a mask on Sunday, told Gothamist the restrictions were "pure discrimination, pure anti-Semitism." She added that her brother had died from the virus in March. But she remained convinced that growing alarm over the pandemic's return was "fake news."

"I'm not concerned about the numbers going up because eventually everyone's going to have it," Rosenberg said. "They're all gonna survive. They'll have an illness like the flu someday, and then it will be over with. It's worth the risk."

The mayor of Manchester, Tenn. has died of the coronavirus, officials announced Monday, as the disease continues to ramp up in the Volunteer State and across the country.

“With a deep sense of sadness and loss, we announce the passing of Mayor Lonnie Norman after being hospitalized for COVID-19 on October 1, 2020,” city officials wrote in a Facebook post. “Mayor Norman passed away in the early hours of Monday, October 12, 2020, after a valiant fight against COVID-19.”

Upon his first election in 1991, Norman became the first black mayor of Manchester, a town of about 10,000 people approximately 65 miles southeast of Nashville, according to local public radio station WPLN.

Norman had just started his third term as mayor over the summer.

Vice Mayor Marilyn Howard had already assumed his duties, WPLN reported.

Coffee County, which includes Manchester, has recorded 1,557 coronavirus diagnoses and 17 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Tennessee as a whole saw 2,068 new diagnoses and nine deaths in just the most recent 24-hour period for which data was available, according to state health officials.
