Cormega speaks on his fifth studio album Mega Philosophy, working with Large Professor, how his traveling and involvement in social issues has affected not only his music but his worldview, what he wants his legacy to be, the New York Knicks, speaks on an album with an unnamed producer that’s going to be crazy, and much more.
Here are some quotes from the interview:
On traveling to Uganda and Haiti:
“It got to a point where you could either close your eyes and act like you don’t know what’s going on or speak on it, and that’s what I decided to do. But I wanted to walk the walk too. I’m active because that’s what my spirit told me I needed to do.”
On motivation:
“I got people who tell me my music helped shape them or helped them through dark times in their life. That stuff always brings me back down to earth…I love to be appreciated around the world. I love it.”
On his writing process:
“My writing process is influenced by life experience or just motivation. Like, I might hear a dope, dope track by somebody. It doesn’t have to be a rapper. It could be a singer like Marvin Gaye, and it might just make me want to write and push me. I’m inspired by numerous things. Sometimes other rappers might inspire me, sometimes music or life might inspire me. I’m always writing.”
On his legacy:
“I’m a fan of this shyt. I start seeing people that I grew up admiring not getting the love and it comes to a point where I had to tell myself that I’m not going to get the props I deserve until I’m dead, probably. But you can either have that attitude like you’re not going to get your props or you could do everything in your power to ensure that you get your props. So I just started taking this shyt a little more serious and I started blaming myself. You can’t blame everybody for shyt. You have to blame yourself. I can’t blame nobody. There’s no industry conspiracy that stopped me from making an album in five years. That’s my fault, whether I did it to sacrifice for my kids or whatever. It’s still on me. I had to take more initiative with my career and that’s what I’m going to do.”
