Common's been in my Top 10 forever, and he's still an elite MC after like 30 years in, but this album just doesn't do it for me.
Lyrically, he's still ill. But the direction of the album, and an entire album carried by Riggins production in 2021, just doesn't work, in my opinion. 13 albums in, he should be sealing his legacy with the kind of work that would be impossible to front on. I get that he wants to change the message and release positive music, but positive music doesn't have to feel redundant and soft.
He should've gotten with Q-Tip, Madlib, or even Pete Rock, and done some jazzy and soulful type shyt that would kinda bring him back full circle to his Resurrection sound. That would fit perfectly with what's going on today, and allow him to go crazy with the rhymes. The shyt he's been cooking up with KR comes off a little too dry for me.
