From Phil Jimenez himself (Trevor Barnes' creator):

Reaction to Trevor Barnes was mixed at best, and hostile at worst. We got calls saying, "Get that Black monkey out of my 'Wonder Woman' comics" (Yes, seriously); and one fan reacted by saying he couldn't relate to Trevor like he could to Steve, because Steve was "blond and blue eyed like him." Many fans loathed the idea that Trevor might be the one to have sex with Diana (then, a virgin) before Steve himself did, even though the post-Crisis version of Steve was significantly older than Wonder Woman and married to another woman. Further, the fact that, in his first introduction, Trevor said "No" to Diana when she asked him out on a date made fans go ballistic, even though they had no idea why he said no (It was explained sometime later).

THE COLOR BARRIER: Jimenez on Wonder Woman, Sexual Identity & Racial Politics - Comic Book Resources

Not too surprising.

So they didn't want the Black dude to get with Wonder Woman, but got mad when he turned her down for a date :mindblown:

It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.... right?!?! :heh: How dare that black mandingo turn down our goddess from a date, he's not good enough for her anyways...

it's a comic book though... :heh:

Its funny how its cool these days. Supergirl and Batgirl are both with black dudes

A big part of it is because its super girl and batgirl. They are known, but not that well known. Similar to why despite heimdale being race-bended, the reaction hasn't been as strong as spider man potentially being a black dude (whether it be a new peter Parker or miles morales) on the big screen, or Johnny Storm being played by Michael B. Jordan.

I can def see similar reactions from before if they paired Wonder Woman with a black dude again, today. Even if it was a well known character like a John Stewart or Cyborg.

Thing is for a lot comic book fans, especially when it concerns the top tier iconic characters, those characters are power fantasies. A reflection of them to some degree.

When marvel announced that spider man was coming back to the MCU, some in the coli were hoping Miles would be the spidey for the film. I told them to keep dreaming. Marvel knew damn well that if they made miles the main character over Peter, the controversy over Johnny Storm will look like a footnote compared to a potential spidey change. It's that serious.
