I looked at Twitter and unsurprisingly fickle ass fans complaining. Last time the 'E had live crowds, Otis was outpopping everyone it seemed. He better cash in when crowds are allowed because that pop will be huge

I think the writer behind that was let go in the recent layoffs.
Mandy is the one who pitched the storyline to Vince personally ..
sure, the writer probably worked along with the story as they all do, but it's not as if she (the writer) was the brainchild of it.

Honestly him winning was the best option low key.
It makes for great storytelling between him and Tucker. How will Tucker feel about his best friend winning on his own?
Also if they are allowed to cash in for the Tag titles that would make things even more interesting.
Tucker might harass him constantly to cash in for the tag belts and Mandy will be in his ear to go after the main title. So many opportunities!

He wasn’t getting main event pops. His tag comebacks got a reaction. Fans can like someone but not accept a main event push within months.
