THE LIGHTHOUSE
I've been neglecting to watch movies on a whole, both old and new for reasons I can't fukking explain (Shut up...you know who you are... reading and judging) other than some irrational fear that I'll be left without something new to watch, but then again, I think I've yet to fully come to terms with me being somewhat of a hoarder and tend to download/keep things cased away for "Emergencies" that will never come unless I or the world, in it's death throes manifest such a condition that would require endless amounts of media to be consumed. Yeah. Either that or I'm a "Pleasure delayer", of some extent. Just off.
And this movie is just about that. Being off. The two characters in this film are "Off". Off the beaten path, by themselves on a crag of rock miles away from any other land masses or helpful hand. They are both off in what is to be expected of their tenure as "Wickies" who tend to a desolate lighthouse surrounded by seemingly malevolent birds that are keen in keeping them "Off balanced" in terms of sanity as they subtly exact their torment. And that infernal yet enchanting light that sets the both of them "Off", in more ways than one, is the unifying factor as to how they came together and as well as what's slowly driving them apart, from themselves as opposed to each other.
Some say this movie is horror and in a sense, it is, but that depends on how far into it you delve. At face value, it's a comedy rooted in Gallows humour that I appreciated the fukk out of, possibly because I'm a fan of old timey literature that's deeply rooted in time periods such as this where common white men were encouraged to embark on adventure lusts, working transient jobs until they sought enough to live off of what was done, or meet their demise in the procurement of it, but that hardly speaks of what this movie is about, though.
If you do watch it, watch the trailer first as opposed to clips found on Youtube about it since the Trailer gives you a well peered view into what to expect, without setting you up for it's inevitable conclusion (As trailers should, but often fail to do in my opinion) as both characters do their best to cope with the situation given and the other's countenance less and lesser until their allotted tenure at the lighthouse they both sailed to operate, ends.
Excellent acting by both Dafoe and Patterson, with both really taking to their roles and giving resoundingly convincing performances. If movies like this drive Patterson to be as good as this to wipe the taste of that awful franchise out of Hollywood and the world's mouth, then I hope to god he continues to take them. He was damned good in this. Dafoe been an acting powerhouse that is recognizable for his looks rather than his performances to the common folk, but that's their loss since he's worth the price of admission had he been here alone, as this salty old sea dog of a captain. Very good shyt.
