I appreciate different things about this on every rewatch. Numerous brilliant decisions and sensitive touches from Ava.

Watched Shoplifters last night on Hulu, movie had me :ehh: and :mjcry: and :ohhh:.

It definitely goes in some places I didn't expect and was unsure how to feel about some of the characters by the end.It had a natural feel to it at times and was able to capture some really genuine human moments. Overall cast is good, even the kid actors :obama:.

It's damn near a masterpiece. I need to buy it and watch it again.

Since you've seen it, a question about the ending.

With Shota, they told him they "rescued" him from a locked car when he was younger. Then the 'mom' figure tells him how to find his real parents when they go visit in the jail. Did you take it as Shota's real parents being neglectful and leaving their son in the car, or they just took him when breaking into cars?

It's been awhile since I watched it, but I remember thinking it was the first option. They definitely stole him, but did so when he was left alone in a car outside of a gambling house if I recall.

If I had known what Whoopi's wig looked like beforehand, I would've never pressed play on this.

Probably both.

His real parents were neglectful but the fam probably only stumbled on him because they were breaking into cars.
