There seems to be some confusion regarding the "protected" players.

They aren't beholden to the same rules as your keepers, as far as needing a draft pick in that round. You can protect ANY PLAYER who's contract didn't expire, which simply prevents the expansion team from keeping them at their round value, and thus drops them into the draft pool.
