I went to the one in Austin a couple years ago, it was pretty cool for the most part, but I was also with family and met up with a few friends in college still so I didn't go out super late. I was able to get an interview with a company just chopping it up with a recruiter there, literally he called and emailed me a few days after the conference finished. I had to turn it down because I was already committed to a company I already accepted an offer from though.

I've been to a couple of stem based conferences that were about 95% white and I promise you, outside of the actual panels and discussions it's the exact same thing after hours. Night time was basically a huge frat party and if that wasn't your thing, you stayed in.

Thank you sir. Most academic and industry conferences are this way, you squeeze in some panels and networking during the day and go hog wild at night. A bunch of boozing, loud ass drum and bass, trying to cheat on your wife, trying to bag a grad student, popping designer drugs or going off and doing mushrooms.

Get blitzed, wake up hungover, do it all over again. Get your company or another company to pay for everything, enjoy life.

This goes for Wall Street, Tech, Law, Academia, and any other profession you can think of. This applies to the U.S., France, South America, Asia, and any other country you can think of.

Nothing was wrong with these conferences until they became the new space for a scammers. 1-2k courses with useless information.

O man, i remember those days. I miss the conferences but yea, being the only black person most of the time, and all the time being the only black developer (if there was another black person, they were in like sales or marketing)

• In the Bahamas, it was fun connecting with the hotel/conference staff since they were all Bahamanian and my parents are Caribbean.
• I did feel sad that the black couple on vacation thought I was part of the staff, but I get it, was in a suit and tie for the conference.
• White people in sales can be hilarious, one dude was drunk and jumped in the indoor hotel fountain, and showed up to the banquet without even drying off
• Only thing is sometimes I'm pretty introverted, so if I don't know anybody or the people I know are talking to someone and I'm not drinking, I might just sit by myself
