“Hawes’s vision and execution as writer/director are skillful and as some of the heavier themes of the series are introduced in the later portion, are handled with a deft and clear sense of purpose.

I’d recommend Silver & Gold to anyone looking for an entertaining series full of interesting, dynamic characters and a plot that keeps you absorbed from episode to episode. “

The accolades continue to roll in for Silver & Gold, as it’s been announced that the series has been named an official selection of the upcoming 5th annual New Jersey Web festival. The Jaro Media presented series is no stranger to acclaim, having amassed over 20 nominations from 10 different film festivals since its debut in October of 2022.
The series got off to a hot start, with 5 nominations at the 6th annual Minnesota Webfest, winning one for Best Series Script. Since then, the series has gone on to win Best Web Series from The Oniros Film Awards, Best Actress from The Virgin Spring Cinefest, and Best Director from The Cult Critic Movie Awards, amongst other honors.

Silver & Gold was created by Alonge Hawes, who also directs, writes, and serves as showrunner. The series stars Quentin Williams and Brittaney Traylor as Charles Goldar and Bahiya Payne, two of the smoothest, sexiest, and slickest thieves in the Atlanta underground. When, in the quest for bigger scores and greater riches, they decide to team up with an eccentric computer genius and a stoic conman, it all seems like a match made in bandit’s heaven. But when the sins of the past begin to ransack the riches of the present; this ragtag team of criminals will have no choice but to rely on something money can’t buy: Trust.

Silver & Gold also stars Roberto Cruz as conman Sosa Gerena and Shani Hawes as computer hacker Cierra Valentine. Julian Robinson, Joshua Quinn, Pantheah Hawes, Claudette Thomason, Roxzanne T. Mims, and Angela Van Tassel also star. The series is executive produced by Alonge Hawes through his A Million Stories One Pen Productions company.

Richard DeVaughn, Shani Hawes, Jamal McClendon, Rodderick Fedd, Joshua Dennard, and Cordarol Sanders serve as producers. The series first six episodes are available for streaming on Jaro TV through both the Jaro Media website and the Jaro TV Roku app.

The New Jersey Web Festival, created and run by Neem Basha, launched in 2018 and has since become one of the biggest, most prestigious, and respected film festivals dedicated to supporting and honoring independent film makers in web and podcast mediums. In addition to digital series and podcasts, the New Jersey Web Festival also works to highlight pilots, scripts, trailers and music videos from independent creators nationwide and abroad.

It is ranked as one of FilmFreeway’s best reviewed festivals and networking mixers. The festival’s long-standing adage is that “Quality Is The Only Criteria: We Want To Showcase The Very Best.”

The New Jersey Web Festival will take place September 21-24, with special screenings of official selections being held at the Clairidge Movie Theater in Montclair, NJ.

Alonge Hawes Wins Big At 2023 New Jersey Web Festival

The fifth annual New Jersey Web Festival took place on Sunday night, September 25th. Taking place live from Montclair’s Brookside Banquets, Alonge Hawes was one of the biggest winners of the night. The multi-hyphenate took home the award for Best Director in A Thriller for the series ‘Silver & Gold’, a series he also created, wrote, and co-stars in. Hawes’s win comes off a festival awards hot streak, having picked up wins at the Cult Critic Movie Awards (Best Director), The Oniros Film Awards (Best Screenplay), and the Minnesota Webfest (Best Series Script).

This latest win marks Hawes’s first victory at the prestigious New Jersey Web Festival, where ‘Silver & Gold’ entered the evening as a five-category nominee. In addition to this, Hawes also beat out last year’s reigning directing champion Jayleen S. Perez, who returned to the category with the short film ‘Karmen’.

In addition to Perez, Hawes was also up against Jamaal R. Green (“Out All Night”), Ian David Diaz (“Rebecca Gold”), Kevin Hejna (“Absolved”), David Joseph Higgins (“Loved”), and Sally Lomidze (“White Willow Lake”).

Accepting his award, Hawes thanked his fellow nominees and creatives in attendance, calling them heroes for being the only ones who understood the often rigorous and thankless job of independent content creation. He also referenced his own struggles in getting his projects funded and distributed. “Since I started this journey six years ago, not a day goes by that somebody doesn’t ask me what happens if I don’t,” Hawes said. “What if I don’t get the budget I need? What if I don’t get the validation? What if I don’t get the awards?” Holding up his trophy triumphantly, Hawes declared, “I guess we’ll never know,” before walking off to enthusiastic applause from his peers.

Despite references to the struggles of being an independent filmmaker, Hawes has enjoyed quite a rise since creating, writing, and starring in his debut project, the web series ‘Blue Collar Hustle’ in 2017. The series ran for two seasons across multiple platforms including Seeka.tv, Goindietv, and KweliTV. His next project, another digital series titled ‘Black On Both Sides,’ ran for two seasons and 16 episodes on Seeka.TV.

‘Silver & Gold’ is presented in partnership with Jaro Media, a multimedia company created by Richard DeVaughn. In addition to creating, writing, directing, and co-starring, Hawes also serves as the series showrunner.

The series is executive produced by Alonge Hawes through his A Million Stories One Pen Productions company. Richard DeVaughn, Shani Hawes, Jamal McClendon, Rodderick Fedd, Joshua Dennard, and Cordarol Sanders serve as producers. The series’ first six episodes are available for streaming on Jaro TV through both the Jaro Media website and it’s Jaro TV Roku app.

A year after its debut, Silver & Gold is finally returning with new episodes. The critically acclaimed, award-winning series is set to make its return Monday, December 4th with a special 60-minute episode on Jaro Media. The episode, the 7th in the series first season, is titled “The Valley Of Sorek” and will explore the perilous and tragic backstory of Sosa Gerena, one of the show’s most guarded and enigmatic figures. The official episode synopsis is provided below.
“As Charles and Bahiya wrestle with how to deal with the mysticism surrounding the fragments, they can’t forget other more pressing responsibilities; namely paying the exorbitant bounty Bahiya promised to Cierra and Sosa. As tempers rise and loyalty is tested, Sosa is confronted with the demons of a life long ago abandoned. And when the gunfire settles and the smoke is cleared, Sosa will be faced with the reality that blood isn’t always thicker than water.”

‘Silver & Gold’ Returns to JARO: Review of Caper 7

The Alonge Hawes created series finally returns with one of its most poignant and tragic installments.

After a year of delays, Silver & Gold, the heist series created, written, and directed by independent auteur Alonge Hawes is finally airing new episodes. The 7th installment, or “Caper” as the episodes have been billed, is titled “The Valley of Sorek” and offers a look into the origins and backstory of one the series main characters, Sosa Gerena (portrayed by Roberto Cruz Jr.).
I must say, returning after a year with an episode that essentially is a self-contained origin story, instead of following the plot established in the previous six installments, is a risky move. Silver & Gold has been steadily building both its story and characters concurrently, with each episode unveiling the importance of a mysterious set of McGuffins called “Fragments” that are apparently mystical in origin. ”The Valley of Sorek” barely mentions these fragments, in favor of exploring who Sosa was before he became a thief.

Bottle episodes such as this only work if the characters are both interesting and charismatic enough to warrant an effective “Time Out” on the main series plot to focus on said character. Series such as Lost, Game Of Thrones, and Westworld would routinely pause their narratives to explore the lives, experiences, and motivations of their side characters, independent of the main arc of a woman with a fire-breathing dragon knocking on the kingdom’s door or an alcoholic doctor attempting to reconcile with his ghost-dad, to varying degrees of success.

img1

It could be argued that in an attempt to be “sprawling” and “expansive,” some of the aforementioned series suffered in straining their characters’ motivations and credibility. I am happy to say that with the episode in question, Silver & Gold eschews this problem and is still on pace to be one the best independent series and viewing experiences available for consumption.

“The Valley of Sorek” opens not too much later than where Caper 6, “The Color of Jazz is Blu(e),” ends. Bahiya Payne (a continually strong Brittaney Traylor) and her beau Charles Goldar (the ever-charming Quentin Williams) are discussing both the mysterious Fragments and the effect they seem to have on Charles. And exactly why are the coolly villainous Ramses and the members of Uhuru so obsessed with collecting all of them?

Before any of these questions can receive a satisfying answer, Bahiya informs Charles of the pricy bounty she promised both computer hacker extraordinaire Cierra Valentine (Shani Hawes) and aloof con-man Sosa Gerena (Cruz Jr.) for assisting her in the previous episode’s caper. Problem is, they don’t have the money, which leads to an intense Mexican standoff style confrontation in which guns are drawn and the fun dynamic the group of thieves has established throughout the previous episodes seems primed to dissolve. That is until Sosa receives a phone call from a voice telling him to meet at a secret location. It is at this point that the narrative follows Sosa exclusively. Bahiya, Charles, and Cierra only appear intermittently, and alongside Sosa, a new crop of characters are introduced to tell Sosa’s Shakespearean-like backstory.

Sosa Gerena has, up to this point, been a stoic character of few words. He acts as the muscle and straight man to the eccentric Cierra, the too-cool-for-school Charles, and the seductress Bahiya. In that role, some might find Sosa upstaged or even sometimes forgotten amongst the group’s playful dynamic. Putting Sosa’s character front and center and giving him his own cast to play off does wonders for both the character and actor. Roberto Cruz Jr centers Sosa’s stoicism and detached nature in the trauma of his life story. Raised as the heir-apparent to an organized Puerto-Rican crime syndicate known as “The Locuo,” Sosa has always displayed a calm, distant demeanor.

His life is one of both privilege and peril, for every moment of joy and triumph, danger lurks like a stalking lion ready to pounce. Sosa also has a daughter, Sosita (played by his real-life daughter Sosa Cruz) and Sosa acts as her basketball coach when time permits. The scenes between Sosa and Sosita are tender and add a touch of humanity to Sosa’s character, allowing the audience to see him smile and laugh––something he rarely does in previous episodes.

sosa2

Moreover, the introduction of Sosa’s crime boss father Manoah (Herman Spearman) and best friend and right-hand man Carlos (Ray Lester) allow for further examining and exploration of his character. Manoah is fiercely proud of his son and anxious to pass along the mantle of leadership to him. Carlos is loyal and respects Sosa as a man and leader. Sosita adores her father and looks up to him as a source of protection and affection. But what does Sosa, whose real name is revealed to be Semes (itself an original Hebrew pronunciation for the biblical “Samson”) think of himself? His place in the world? His destiny as the leader of a criminal organization?

It is through the last two characters introduced, Ba’al (Andre Eaton Jr) and Susannah (Karris Morgan), that these questions are explored. Ba’al is the leader of a rival gang, the Dagon, who loathes Semes and is envious of the Locuo’s sudden rise in drug trafficking. Susannah is presented as a damsel in distress who Semes attempts to save, and in the process falls in love with. Both of these characters represent the inherent risks and hypocrisies that a life of crime inevitably poise. Can one simultaneously be a lover of few and a plague to many? And how much does the love shown humanize the atrocities inflicted?

Ba’al is played with ruthless menace by Eaton Jr, who chews every line of dialogue with merciless delight. His spectacularly hammy performance is a good counterbalance to Cruz Jr’s more leveled portrayal in a Joker-Caped Crusader type of way. Karris Morgan’s portrayal of Susannah begins as that of the cliché love interest but soon morphs into something else entirely, making the viewer question her true personality and perhaps unveiling someone more sinister than even Ba’al.

Together, this ensemble manages to weave Hawes’s script into a captivating tale of love, betrayal, and tragedy that will keep you guessing up until the last moment. Alonge Hawes continues to prove himself a capable writer-director with a knack for casting and getting the best performances out of his actors. The cinematography by Joshua Dennard continues to impress.

There are moments of gravitas, action, noir, and even some comedy that call for a deft, confident hand, and the camera is positioned to capture it all at just the right moments and angles. Sound continues to be an up and down experience, as the sound design in some scenes is perfect, whilst in others it can be a little too low to make out. At 60 minutes in length, this is the longest episode of Silver & Gold yet, and thankfully, the cast and crew were well up to the challenge.

I would like to give kudos to the new cast members, namely Herman Spearmen, Andre Eaton Jr, and Karris Morgan for coming in late in the series season and providing interesting characters that are instantly memorable. It is no small feat to replace established characters with brand new ones and make them not only watchable, but necessary to the viewing experience.

In conclusion, “The Valley of Sorek” is another great installment in Silver & Gold’s first season. Anchored by the series’ most underrated character, it is a classic tale of crime and passion given a nice coat of modern-day paint thanks to the script by Alonge Hawes and performances by the cast. There are twists, turns, and surprises galore that make for a thrilling ride, and you will continue to have fun with these characters as the saga continues. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t take another year for us to experience another adventure!

A Magical Night in Atlanta: Premier Screening of The Uptown Chronicles

By Dr. Jerome Dorn
Atlanta’s vibrant creative community gathered at the illustrious Atlanta Theater last night for the highly anticipated premiere screening of The Uptown Chronicles, hosted by media personality Ray Cornelius. The event was more than just a viewing; it was a celebration of groundbreaking storytelling, featuring a star-studded panel discussion that offered exclusive insights into the making of this dynamic animated series.
The screening, attended by fans, industry insiders, and local celebrities, showcased the first episode of The Uptown Chronicles, a thrilling new series that follows the Hamilton family. Led by scientist father Dre and guardian mother Maya, the Hamilton children—chef Tasha, bookworm Sienna, average teen Ty, and prodigies Jordan and Keira—discover their ancestral powers and come together to battle Neocron, a mysterious robot threatening their world. With themes of family, destiny, and balance, the series promises to captivate audiences of all ages.
A Power-Packed Panel
Following the screening, an engaging panel discussion was hosted by Ray Cornelius, bringing together the creative minds behind The Uptown Chronicles. The panel included series creator and director Steven Goard, writer and co-director Alonge Hawes, actor-producer Jason Louder, financial strategist Aneesah Bray, and recording artist-turned-actor Lil Zane.
Goard, the mastermind behind the show, spoke passionately about his vision for the series. “We wanted to create something that felt fresh yet timeless—where family dynamics, cultural heritage, and futuristic technology intertwine,” Goard explained. “It’s not just about the Hamiltons’ powers but the challenges they face together as a family.” He also highlighted the show’s commitment to portraying diverse, relatable characters that reflect the richness of modern families.
Alonge Hawes, the writer and co-director, emphasized the importance of Ty’s storyline, as the only Hamilton sibling without powers. “Ty represents the everyday struggles we all face,” Hawes said. “He’s trying to find his place, feeling overshadowed by his siblings. That’s something many of us can relate to, whether we have powers or not.”
Jason Louder, who voices Tariq Lattimore, discussed the challenges of bringing a father figure like Dre to life. “Dre is the heart of the family, but he’s also a man with immense responsibility,” Louder shared. “He has to balance being a father, a husband, and a scientist while knowing the fate of the world rests on his family. It’s a lot of weight to carry, and I wanted that to come through in his voice.”
Aneesah Bray, a financial strategist for the series, touched on the business side of things. she explained the strategic monetization efforts planned for the show, including premium content offerings and global collaborations. “The Uptown Chronicles is more than a show—it’s a brand,” Bray said. “We’re leveraging all available platforms to maximize fan engagement, from interactive experiences to educational spin-offs. Our goal is to make this a global phenomenon.”
Lil Zane, a recording artist who also lends his voice to one of the characters, shared his excitement about the series. “Being part of The Uptown Chronicles has been a dream,” he said. “It’s such a unique blend of action, family, and culture. I think people are going to love seeing these characters grow and evolve.”
A Night of Inspiration and Unity
As the panel wrapped up, the energy in the theater was palpable. Attendees were not only drawn to the breathtaking animation and action-packed scenes but to the series’ core themes of family unity, identity, and empowerment. The Hamilton family’s journey to discovering their powers mirrors the real-world struggle to embrace one’s heritage and personal strength—a message that resonated deeply with the Atlanta audience.
Throughout the night, it was clear that The Uptown Chronicles was set to make waves, not just for its stunning visuals and storytelling but for the rich tapestry of themes it explores. With a setting rooted in a futuristic Chicago suburb, the series taps into modern-day challenges while drawing on ancient mythology, offering a narrative that appeals to audiences from all walks of life.
A Look Ahead
The premiere screening and panel discussion were just the beginning. The Uptown Chronicles is set to make its official debut across various streaming platforms, and fans can expect to see even more from the Hamilton family as the series unfolds. With plans to expand the franchise globally and explore spin-offs, Goard and his team have created a universe ripe with possibilities.
In a media landscape eager for fresh, diverse voices, The Uptown Chronicles stands out as a series ready to redefine animated television. The premiere proved that Atlanta is not only a cultural hub for film and television but a launching pad for the next big thing in entertainment. As the credits rolled and the lights came up in the Atlanta Theater, one thing was clear: The Uptown Chronicles is a force to be reckoned with.
This night was more than just a screening—it was the dawn of a new era in animation, one that blends cutting-edge technology, family dynamics, and cultural heritage in a way we’ve never seen before. Keep your eyes on The Uptown Chronicles. This is only the beginning.
