I’m glad
@Nigmund Freud specificed that it’s in current form, or else it’d be really hard to pick one from the list. With those parameters, it became easier for me to whittle it down:
Taker - I have no doubt AJ and him could lay out a smartly worked match that would overcome Taker’s age and physical limitations at this point in his career (and I could really say that about everyone on that list, that person and AJ are both smart enough and skilled enough to pull it off) but, after watching him fight Roman this year, to me it’s clear he’s done. He moved tired, spent, and beaten. In this match AJ would do most of the heavy lifting, but I’d rather Taker just rode off into the sunset.
Austin - Before his last match nearly fifteen years ago he was really beaten up and worn down. After it, he was no better off. Even though he looks to still be in good shape, that’s not necessarily ring shape. He and AJ could work a smart brawl but I’d rather he not risk his health.
Angle - Kurt probably has a mini run left in him, but I’ve seen him and AJ wrestle so many times together there’s no new ground for me there. It’d be a good match for sure, but there’s no intrigue for me.
Bryan - If he could get medically cleared, I’d love to see it. Whether you believe WWE in that they were right to bench him or Bryan’s word that he can still go, there’s no denying it’d be a special match. Even if they wrestled back in the day, they’ve evolved enough as performers to bring something new and exciting to the table.
Punk - If he had the passion to return, they’d tear the house down. Post WM29 Punk was a clear shell of himself who just wanted to get out, who only put any effort in when he faced Brock. He looks to be in good shape (not necessarily ring shape) despite being a few years older since his last run, and match layout was always his biggest strength in ring. So him and AJ could tear it up would he choose to return with that fire he once had.
Rock - Still in phenomenal shape, looks like he could have another mini run if allowed to. He can still play the hits (Rock Bottom, People’s Elbow) and can sell and bump well. Only real concern would be if he got hurt again but the only injuries he suffered in his last return was against Cena, oddly enough.
HBK - Looked in great shape last year at Mania and even at Summerslam this year if you ditch the Colonel Sanders getup. Whether or not that translates to ringshape is iffy since he hasn’t wrestled in nearly eight years, but could reasonably make a return for a one off if he had to (theoretically anyway).
It’s really only Rock or Shawn Michaels to me. Stylistically, AJ and HBK match up better than him and Rock but either way I think you’d get a classic.
