He signed with Fox, but it's obvious that this'll lead to some form of return. He'll definitely show up on a Smackdown soon.
As for the move, it'll be over for two weeks and then back to the same old shyt. Nostalgia has not worked for WWE in the past two years. Nobody gives a shyt about guys coming back anymore and the ratings have proved that. Austin, who barely made appearances didn't draw shyt, and WWE has overused these to the point that nobody cares anymore because RAW is still a three-hour boring show and SD is a two-hour boring show. Punk won't do much if or when he does return to the ring. He's gonna get a match with HHH, but the fans aren't going to care.
The reason AEW fans seem mad is that the dude talked all this shyt, and when a company with some buzz actually hit the scene, he went back to Daddy. It comes off as disingenuous, especially after all the Colt stuff and the fact that the same company he's seemingly working with sued him twice-- the second being for some petty shyt.
I don't mind him getting his money, but dude is a carny for that. Jericho of all people seems to be the only old fukk who realizes that the younger guys might have something, but they need the guidance.
