Former Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis will announce his retirement this week, the team announced Tuesday via Twitter.

Portis spent seven of his nine seasons in the National Football League with the Redskins. Between 2004 and 2010, Portis rushed for 6,824 yards and 46 touchdowns for Washington.

"It's a beginning and an end," Portis said in a tweet shortly after the announcement. "This is just the new beginning to the rest of my life."

He also represented the Redskins in the 2008 Pro Bowl. However, injuries plagued Portis in his final season with the team, limiting him to just 227 yards in five games.

The Redskins cut Portis after a torn groin muscle ruined his 2010 season, unwilling to pay for another year of his expensive contract.

He was unable to find another team and ends his career 77 yards shy of 10,000, No. 27 on the NFL's all-time list.

The University of Miami product burst into the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2002 with style, rushing for 1,508 yards and 15 touchdowns to earn the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award. He followed that up with a career-high 1,591 yards in 2003.

After the 2003 season, the Broncos traded him to the Redskins in exchange for cornerback Champ Bailey.

dude came in the league at 200 lbs, fukking Joe Gibbs had him gain 30 lbs, and thought it was a good idea.

had he stayed in Denver, he'd have ran for like 1400+ every year without fail.
