Mecca was not regional.First 3 Tribe albums are classic. Pete Rock & CL Smooth have classic songs but no classic albums by consensus. More regional classic than anything.
RhythmOnce again to me on this list of strict classics, it could go, so I voted no on that kinda basis.
Don't care much for Pubic Enemy, Rhythm, Ham n Eggs or Description of a Fool.
But that's neither here nor there. Because I don't enjoy Criminal Minded at all bar like two/three songs but it's a classic.
It's just there was room for improvement. Rhymes were too simple, comedic and song writing far inferior. Not to mention Phife was hardly on at all and the synergy didn't seem all there. Musically brilliant, as is to be expected, but even then it wasn't entirely consistent. LET and MM far better in all facets.
Rhythm
Ham N Eggs
description of a fool
All amazing songs to me. But they aren't the best songs on the album to me. That's what makes this album so amazing.
Pubic Enemy was probably my least favorite song on the album and even that's undeniable.
Yeah it was simplistic on the rhyme front, yeah it was a little silly at times. That's just part of the appeal to me.
Not sure what you mean by song writing.
Phife hadn't emerged yet. Fair point.
MM is my favorite.
I go back and forth with this and LET as my number two.
I really love this album.
I was just playing it tonight doing dishes.
Someone explain why PITPOR has the necessary quality to be a classic? Just curious.
I voted Tribe's first 3. 1 for Pete Rock/CL Smooth. Man... CL was lucky as fukk. Dude wasted so many beats. He was never wack, but fairly mediocre.
Haven't heard that Lots of Lovin track in many years. That beat... .sheesh
Because they contain some of the best hip hop tracks ever recorded.
"Bonita Applebum" (which, frankly, is the best "hip hop for girls" track I've ever heard). Didn't Pharrell once say that this track pretty much change his life?
"Footprints" (just beauty)
"Can I Kick It?" Fun, goofy shyt. I don't really listen to this but it's a classic.
"The Art of Moving Butts"..... that beat
Yes the album is uneven as fukk, and the other albums were more consistent (esp Midnight Marauders)... but I'd argue that Tribe have never made a single song as good as Bonita Applebum since. They've come close a lot, but Bonita Applebum is just something else.
Also, classics capture their era really well. This album is very late 80s. Afrocentric, innocent. "The good ol days"
The only stone-cold classic in the whole bunch is Midnight Marauders imo. The rest can go either way.
