First 3 Tribe albums are classic. Pete Rock & CL Smooth have classic songs but no classic albums by consensus. More regional classic than anything.

Once again to me on this list of strict classics, it could go, so I voted no on that kinda basis.

Don't care much for Pubic Enemy, Rhythm, Ham n Eggs or Description of a Fool.

But that's neither here nor there. Because I don't enjoy Criminal Minded at all bar like two/three songs but it's a classic.

It's just there was room for improvement. Rhymes were too simple, comedic and song writing far inferior. Not to mention Phife was hardly on at all and the synergy didn't seem all there. Musically brilliant, as is to be expected, but even then it wasn't entirely consistent. LET and MM far better in all facets.

All amazing songs to me. But they aren't the best songs on the album to me. That's what makes this album so amazing.
Pubic Enemy was probably my least favorite song on the album and even that's undeniable.

Yeah it was simplistic on the rhyme front, yeah it was a little silly at times. That's just part of the appeal to me.

Not sure what you mean by song writing.
Phife hadn't emerged yet. Fair point.
MM is my favorite.
I go back and forth with this and LET as my number two.
I really love this album.
I was just playing it tonight doing dishes. :wow:

Like compare the writing of I Lost My Wallet in El Segundo to Infamous Date Rape or 8 Million Stories. The latter two are way better developed. That's an example of what I mean.

Haha whether you're shuffling snow or doing dishes, you're always playing the album being discussed! What a trooper

First three Tribe albums + Pete and CL debut are unquestioned classics. Main Ingredient had too many chick tracks, love Beats Rhymes and Life, personal classic, but understand why it was considered "different" especially after the first three albums. Love Movement has aged well too.

let, mm, mecca, mi

if you just listened to tribe's first without any knowledge of the second and third, the first would be a classic too, but they got better and better with the second and third so imo the first tend to be forgotten. i think you can compare it against eric b & rakim's first three to a certain extent. the first was innovative, then the other two that followed took it to a whole new level

mecca is a yes, but i thought main ingredient flowed better overall

I voted Tribe's first 3. 1 for Pete Rock/CL Smooth. Man... CL was lucky as fukk. Dude wasted so many beats. He was never wack, but fairly mediocre.

Haven't heard that Lots of Lovin track in many years. That beat... .sheesh

Someone explain why PITPOR has the necessary quality to be a classic? Just curious.

Because they contain some of the best hip hop tracks ever recorded.

"Bonita Applebum" (which, frankly, is the best "hip hop for girls" track I've ever heard). Didn't Pharrell once say that this track pretty much change his life?

"Footprints" (just beauty)

"Can I Kick It?" Fun, goofy shyt. I don't really listen to this but it's a classic.

"The Art of Moving Butts"..... that beat :whew:

Yes the album is uneven as fukk, and the other albums were more consistent (esp Midnight Marauders)... but I'd argue that Tribe have never made a single song as good as Bonita Applebum since. They've come close a lot, but Bonita Applebum is just something else.

Also, classics capture their era really well. This album is very late 80s. Afrocentric, innocent. "The good ol days"

The only stone-cold classic in the whole bunch is Midnight Marauders imo. The rest can go either way.

Footprints is my fav track on the album! Push It Along is sonically majestic!

Yeah there are some monster tracks but not consistent enough for me. But yeah I could see it going either way. I think LET is a steve austin classic too

By the definition in the OP, I'll say the first two Tribe albums and that's it.

People always are on the fence about Main Ingredient. I think it's a classic tbh. That's what got me into Pete Rock and Cl, and I had the M&TSB first.

And cl didn't waste beats, you just gotta follow him tough
