So if I assume that the quality of an album is at least approximately in line with the average quality of the songs on the album (give or take), then what sort of average are we talking:

I assume most ppl would say mean but I wonder if they can satisfactorily explain why the other averages are less valid?

It is opinion. As I said, I judge on quality first and I feel there is too much filler on AEOM to call it classic, remember this is in line with MY personal definition. I don't think anyone is stupid if they disagree with me.
