They tried it and it didn't work. No need to be obstinate. I'm down with fundemental police reform and accountability (improved routine training on conflict de-escliation & force, a major improvement on the transparency of internal investigations, and better screening for people with authority abuse issues), but understaffing doesn't seem to be the solution. You'll have an overworked stressed out police force, that will hire anyone off the street with minimal training, that doesn't sound good for anybody.
Needs reform and demilitarization.

Defund the police was an activist slogan that the right wing, the media and Democratic moderates placed on the "crazy" progressives because they don't want to see any change in the criminal justice system.

the ideas on which it was based - taking funding from police for non-police work to fund municipal social emergency response teams - made a lot of sense, tho it definitely isn't something that could happen overnight. only the slogan was stupid and huge misfire

Also the primary goal of local governments is to keep the city safe. You can’t do that with less police sorry. That’s just a reality. We all want better police standards and qualifications but reducing the police budget is just not practical

They mentioned the facts on the ground and realities about public safety, while others were repeating the slogan to appease their backers.

The issue, like most things, is the media destroyed the movement and focused solely on funding the police aspect and hyped up crime around the country, which hadn't actually gone up. Most of our politicians have no interest in doing anything about policing, as evident by them doing nothing about it since George Floyd was killed. That shyt was intentional, and many black elected leaders were quick to support it because they are fine with police violence against poor black people---and living in DC with a black mayor and growing up in black as hell PG county, I know this because I have seen it.
I think defunding the police will have to happen if we want to have an orderly society, but the people who advocate for it need to start framing things as money for schools, money for mental health, money for roads, social services, health care, etc.
But saying it started by white liberals in gentrified areas is one of the most cacified things I have ever heard because it isn't true.
