CIA Director Petraeus Resigns Over 'Affair'
by Ben Shapiro 9 Nov 2012, 12:30 PM PDT
Just two days after President Obama’s re-election, General David Petraeus, the CIA Director, has resigned from the administration over an extramarital affair. Petraeus was slated to testify before Congress next week on the murder of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, in Benghazi. Bret Baier of Fox News just tweeted, "With Petraeus’ resignation effective immediately, he will not testify next week & lawmakers are said to be 'stunned' by the announcement."
If this is true in which I doubt, he did the right thing.
Petraeus had no choice. A secret affair (as, of course, affairs are) creates a coersion opportunity that the intelligence community could not allow in one of its professional operatives, let alone the DCI. Credit to him for removing that possibility by making it public while doing the right thing in resigning.
Patraeus is among those who represent what is best about America.
A lifetime of stellar service to his country as a scholar, a much decorated combat veteran, an illustrious and respected commander in Afghanistan, and director of CIA. In the private sector this man could have translated all of that talent and drive into a lucrative business career, but he chose instead to dedicate his life to public service.
Any student of history knows that all men - great and small - will in time err, as is human. His resignation was the honorable and correct decision following a poor personal choice. Nevertheless, all of us owe this patriot a debt of gratitude.
And those pathetic few who refuse to recognize his extraordinary service, I suspect, do so seeing their own lives as puny in comparison to the sheer magnitude of his accomplishments. I wish the general well.
