I meant in a sense where there wasn't massive shootouts and explosives half the time. I guess the CIA gotta keep 100% deniability so they probably do use proxies/goons..

Exactly, plausible deniability is a key concept in clandestine operations.

Only way CIA starts unloading bullets when they have guys on the ground with overwhelming fire power (i.e armed drones)

They would never engage in direct counter ops against cartels, next thing you know a video pops up of a middle Caucasian (or black ) male/female in front of a black plastic wall with armed men holding Kalashnikovs ready to piece dude up for the media after they torture him to admit CIA operations


Now of course the CIA is on the ground in Mexico, but they are more than likely working with a Cartel or two (my bet are the Zetas, due to American military connections and the Sinoloas becoming the premier trafficking threat to the US)

They were bolstering the Orejuelas with the Cali Cartel and even propping up the leftists (FARC) to take over the whole thing after that. How else do you think the price had dropped so damn low for bricks back in the day? Military Intelligence slaughtered the cartels and brought production under one FARC umbrella.

I wouldn't be surprised if eventually Mexico "asks us for help" getting El Chapo and all them and they just turn Mexico into Colombia 2.0. Birdies still going for damn near 30 out here.
