I can’t say I’m surprised. Things became a bit ridiculous and repetitive, even for a show about a voodoo-cursed killer doll. It’s clear that the roles that Tom Holland (the director) and John Lafia played were the real reason in making Chucky the horror icon he is today, which seems to bother Don Mancini immensely. While Don has a remarkable talent for creating striking visuals and he’s got some good ideas, but he could benefit from having someone to reel him back when he ventures into over-the-top territory. Had Don's original concept been realized, it likely would have faded into obscurity for 30 years, only to be referenced as a forgotten horror film on platforms like JoBlo Horror YouTube.
