It's not. It was coopted by them as a weapon used by the upper ranks in society to control minds. Dark ages in Europe the church had full control of the monarchy and the people basically and the Pope was the most powerful position in Europe.
The reason the outdated beliefs have stuck around so long is because of how well perfected an instrument of brainwashing it had become over the years.
Why would the real God create people and send them to hell forever for mistakes that happened in a finite amount of time? Why would God write a creation story that emphasizes an incorrect view of the solar system with Earth being the center of the universe that just so happens to align with the beliefs of the time? Heliocentrism was well documented as blasphemy by the church and because it made their doctrines fall apart and they'd lose control.
