Houston Rockets big man Christian Wood recalled a nightmarish start to his NBA career in 2015 that included going undrafted and getting dumped by his girlfriend in the same night.

“I lost my girlfriend that night, too,” Wood recently told The Ringer. “I dropped her off at the airport after the draft and never saw her again.”

Amidst rumors regarding a poor work ethic, Wood's draft stock plummeted. Originally expected to be taken in the first round, Wood was without a team at the end of the night. “He was definitely a first-round talent coming out of college,” one NBA executive said. “Him going undrafted was all based on background intel.”

Wood, who was among the first NBA players to test positive for COVID-19, eventually signed with the 76ers and floated in and out of the G-League. In 2017, he played in the Chinese Basketball Association but was eventually waived: “To get cut from a team in China because they tell me I wasn’t good enough — that really tested me. That was the breaking point,” Wood said.

“I still haven’t reached my goal. I want to be an All-Star. I feel like I can be one of the top players in the league,” Wood said.

On Nov. 24, 2020, Wood and the Pistons worked out a sign-and-trade deal. After accepting $41 million – fully guaranteed according to Spotrac.com — over three years, Wood became one of the pieces in the Houston Rockets’ makeover in a swap for Trevor Ariza and incoming rookie Isaiah Stewart.

Halfway through last season I'm checking box scores and wondering who the hell this C Wood is that's putting up numbers. Doing a deeper dive I was impressed with his game. And then the backstory and drive. It's amazing how many players are over looked because he kept getting cut from teams. He's still being over looked because he didn't get resigned and imo his contract is very good for his production so he didn't get full value.

I had him marked as a free agent I'd go after for the wizards. Thought he'd work well with wall and Beal and next to thomas bryant. And I wanted us to finally bring in cousins.

So it's interesting to me he's paired with wall and cousins on another team but with Harden instead of Beal and I think this should work.

Apparently breh had all types of red flags...It must of been bad cause there is no reason a player with his combination of size, ability and skill go undrafted and bounce around like he did....But breh put in that work to get stronger and improve defensively....He is the prototype of the modern big.

I agree he would have been perfect on the wiz , instead shepherd goes out his way to overpay Bertans:beli:

But I think he had his move set on Htown do to his connection with Silas.

Hopefully he learned his lesson from this and the way he played last season is the way he will play going forward. It always gives me pause though when a player like this all of a sudden starts to ball out right before getting a big contract.
