I think one of the issues is that most of the reviews (here) are putting the movie at 6.5 or 7 on a rating scale.
He did something different....but what was different wasn't "great". If Chi-Raq was Malcolm X, Jungle Fever, Do The Right Thing, etc quality of work I think everybody would join the support
Anytime something is different it gets judged harsher sometimes unfairly. Sometimes a solid or good film isnt enough
But where does the blame really go though? I see both sides to it. On one hand why would people be upset at a breh for doing something different? On the other hand one of the few brehs with power/influence chose to do something different instead of making it "reality".
