What is this fake narrative that Cooley High was about gang violence? It wasn't! It's about high school kids cutting school and getting into some trouble but not fukkin' murder.

nikka did you fukkin see Cooley High?:russ: It OPENLY had references to notorious Chicago gangs like the Gangster Disciples

Yeah because if you reference something that means it addresses said problem involvoing them. Stop being so simple. Did Preach or Cochise you know the main characters kill anyone or were they gang members? If no, the movie isn't about that.

nikka what the fukk type of logic is that:skip:

Ricky and Tre werent gang members so Boyz in the Hood isnt about gang violence:skip:

Cooley wasnt completely about gang violence but it is obviously a problem in the movie

Saw it Saturday night and enjoyed the movie, knew what it was going into the movie. Went with my girl she didn't really like to it due to the rhyming style dialogue, i had basically explained to her how it was a satire and in play form. I can see why some wouldn't like it and i also see why some would like it. I like how they gave an idea at the end of the movie with Fortune 500 companies creating jobs with and creating treatment & mental health healing centers in and near the hoods.

Thing is breh with spike Lee films it is either you like them or hate them there is no in between. I accept that and understand it when watching his films. They are not for everyone. I myself like his films because they force you to think. But hey that is me....I don't watch 99% of the shyt on TV because it doesn't force you to think.

I think one of the issues is that most of the reviews (here) are putting the movie at 6.5 or 7 on a rating scale.

He did something different....but what was different wasn't "great". If Chi-Raq was Malcolm X, Jungle Fever, Do The Right Thing, etc quality of work I think everybody would join the support :manny:

Anytime something is different it gets judged harsher sometimes unfairly. Sometimes a solid or good film isnt enough :yeshrug:

But where does the blame really go though? I see both sides to it. On one hand why would people be upset at a breh for doing something different? On the other hand one of the few brehs with power/influence chose to do something different instead of making it "reality".

Just a tough situation. Spike made his movie. It's time we accept it....and just hope there is a true to life Chicago/Chi-Raq movie in the future.

Spike is like a great older athlete trying to chase the records he had as a younger player. Spike will never live up to his past films it is just impossible. But I respect that even now he is still not afraid to tackle tough subjects that most won't touch.

I will say this....I would love for him (not even sure if he would touch this subject) make a film about a black man or black woman or black family. That is feed up by the events in america in terms of racism and decides to save money and move to Africa. That shyt would be an amazing movie and would really put a bow on spikes career how he touched on every aspect of black life in his films.

Another thing Spike failed to do was address the youth. Chicago is baffling because the violence is a culture that 14 year olds are participating in. They're the hungriest wolves. Girls be 13 and pregnant. Making every character 18+ minimizes the fact that what's going on is a cycle.

Yep....true I am born and raised in Chicago and the gang violence no matter the race has always been mainly with young folks.

But the violence in the city is in the cities DNA. I mean you can go back to the 20s and see all the gang violence. One of the biggest issues with the black and Latin gang violence is that they were never able to leave the gangs and use the gangs as a tool to get legit.

Where as Irish, Jewish and Italian gangs and gang member were able to leave those lives and become legit with no push back from society. Case in point Mayor Daley Sr. was an ex gang member.

That just tells you how deep gang culture is and was in Chicago.

no lead got killed by gang members overrules the fact they are threatened by gangs, the school had gang graffiti and there are open references to gang activity in the movie.:stopitslime:

I guess it would be comforting to you that I am white because I don’t agree with you? Newsflash: Black folks don’t all think and act alike ,only racists cacs think like that. Unless . . . :ohhh:
And really take your own advice.
