There’s a chart on this somewhere online that shows an increase in hetero transmission immediately after that 1st batch of bad blood came out. I’ll post it later if I can find it.
Its funny tho, I swear this is the only topic I remember about China from 6th grade social studies. Both Africa and China had 2 pages out of several hundred in our text book, so I paid more attention to them. Georgia public schools were weird. It was the China hiv thing on one page and Swahili city states on the other.

Notice the sharp increase after the 80s (post bad batch of blood) of heterosexual transmition as opposed to gays. Even right now the vast majority of china’s transmitions comes from ordinary heterosexual actions.
I think what really messed it up for them was that the initial humanitarian organization’s contaminated blood supply went to a poorer district, so people just kept hooking up as usual in the absence of contraceptives or knowledge of positive status. Its somewhat similar to how hiv spreads among hetero communities in Africa.
As a caveat, I will note that the homo portion of the distribution has increased in the last 8yrs or so. I wonder what caused such a jump in 2013. I’d love to see a study on that portion in future.
