If China wanted to appear tough they could’ve completely ignored the US and they didn’t.
The US is rightfully worried about the lack of communication between the US and Chinese militaries. The Chinese defense minister has declined meetings with the US Secretary of Defense, and the declinations by the Chinese have occurred multiple times, and at different levels in the org.
Now, this may partially be because the Chinese defense minister is currently under US sanctions.
But we are more safe in a world where the world's two most powerful militaries (that both have nuclear weapons) are in constant communication regardless of how aggressive the rhetoric from the politicians is.

You see I don't believe that, just a few weeks ago you had the US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin asking to speak with China's defense cheif's and they said NO. Then completely rejected them.
Then two weeks later, they request to visit China AGAIN after visiting Saudi Arabia.
Probably because they know China and Middle East are already forming strong ties. All around the US looked desperate and it was a dumb move.
