The problem is two-fold. As a people yes we need to do better but the problem is how. How do you clean up street violence when we can't trust the police to come in and help? Police see every black face as the enemy and as a problem so even the good hard working people would risk getting harrassed or beaten if you bring in more police. Plus the risk of being labeled a snitch and retaliated against if people do cooperate with police. This is what the racists want. They want us killing ourselves. They want us to be ignorant. The system was set up to encourage this violence but also make us scared to call the police so the cycle continues. It's easy to say just work your way out of it but most of these kids are hooked early in life. By the time they realize this isn't the life they want to lead they are stuck playing catch up or already have a record which basically means no one will hire them regardless.

Honestly breh, i think the solution involves both the police or some sort of government intervention in place. Also, you are saying "we" as if all brehs are in the game. No, this is wrong thinking. There's a lot of good people in Chicago. The perception of media has even us lumping everyone as a gangbanger. The other issue is that these gangs have no structure. If they did than at least we can rely on them to police themselves. If a soldier gets out of line they need to be disciplined. Clearly the gangs have lost control of their own selves. I think the answer lies in ensuring community policing actions are in place and the police force has the demographics of the community they are serving in. Lastly, a lot more government funding is needed to get kids out the streets from an early age.
There's no one else who will either.
As long as youth remains uneducated and unskilled, chaos and stupidity will live rent free in their minds.
The generations before them failed these kids.
1. The overarching sentiment from the people in this thread on your side of opinion is that chicago needs urgent government intervention to combat this so called novel wave of black on black crime. Which i reduced to "martial law".
2. A half truth is a whole lie and you know this. shyt wasn't all sunshine during reconstruction. The overwhelming majority of black people were still impoverished oppressed and disenfranchised (sharecropping, black codes, kkk, and slavery via imprisonment, all products of the reconstruction era) and the incentive to commit crime was still very tangible for most.
3. If your basis for opposing my argument is personal agency then it's a flawed rebuttal. An individual's choice holds no weight to a society's fate. Personal agency is being enslaved and having the choice to sneak in the dead of night and kill massa knowing you'll be publically drawn and quartered as result. Everybody has that choice, which is irrelevant to the truth that when a group of people are in that situation most will not immediately risk their life for the sake of ending their oppression. What one can do means nothing when talking about what many will do. Everybody reacts differently to situaions it isn't fair or realistic to expect entire groups of people to act altruistic in dire circumstances. Name one group on earth that you think would play the hand we were given better than us. That ought to be interesting.

What economic opportunities don't we have? Black people are in various different fields in workplaces
Reason why there aren't many of us in some fields than others is because:
1) we're only 13 percent of the population
2) a lot of our culture doesn't promote things that we could find interest in.
People always talk about how tech companies don't hire enough black people when the truth is there aren't enough black people learning tech. Opportunities are there, nikkas just gotta stop wasting time.
