Wouldn't exactly say its a western beauty standard. Asia and India were obsessed with fair skin even before they saw a European. I think it has to do with the fact that light skin bounces light back and it tricks the mind or something. I can't remember the science but regardless this is dangerous but at the end of the day you can't tell people what they can and cant do to their own bodies.

ive always believed fair skin implied a woman who stayed in doors and did not perform hard labor outside...in japan(maybe all of asia) youll regularly see girls with umbrellas to keep their skin fairer

and on the flipside a man with pale skin was seen as effeminate...see bodybuilders and the ridiculous spray tans

im not sure there is a serious study out there to make this correlation but ive heard it multiple times in the past and it makes sense. It just doesnt work with people who are naturally dark(which includes dark skinned southeast asians and indians as well)

IE look at the dynamic of light skin guys and dark skin guys. generally darker skinned guys are presumed to be more masculine just off the jump and this also results in a need for hypermasculinization of darker skinned people in general

I say that to say this That black skin has not always been associated with unattractiveness.....

It seems fairer skin in women is considered attractive in a general sense
And darker skin in men is consider more attractive in a general sense...
I must also say there is a lot of cultural bias and analytic overlay in both those statements...

As much as black women bleach......white women tan.
If it seem most cultures from time immemorial preferred fair skin over black skin that my just be because we are experience European Cultural Imperialism on a Global level.
