First, he didn’t make a joke about hitting women, he made a joke about hitting her.

He shouldn’t have said it, but literally the only reason he shouldn’t have said it is cuz people love to turn these things into something they’re not in this “gotcha” era. He’s public figure, so he should’ve known better than to say this, but I’m not going to pretend that he did anything malicious here.

A simple, "Charles that is too far" or something like that would have sufficed and If he says or does some shyt after that without apologizing, THEN you take it to the next level and call him out appropriately.
