UPDATE: ‘Gambit’ Lands A New Production Start Date – Director Announcement Incoming?

Despite the production halt after the exit of Gambit‘s former director, Gore Verbinskithings seemed to be chugging along as we reported last month that 20th Century Fox planned on still moving forward this summer in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Omega Underground has learned Gambit’s new production start date is June 19th.

They also still plan on filming in New Orleans which will see Captain Marvel filming there in the coming months.

It’s been assumed that stage work will take place at Big Easy Studios where Logan did a bunch of their filming.

This would suggest that 20th Century Fox might be looking to announce a new director in the very near future.

HollywoodReporter recently reported that the studio was looking to get a new script this month and was looking to budget the film, this new production date gives the impression this has indeed happened.

Channing Tatum is very much attached to play Gambit.

The studio has been announcing new release dates for their X-Men lineup but still haven’t moved Gambit from its new release of June 7th, 2019.

Producer Simon Kinberg Hopes to Start Filming Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ This Summer

At Monday’s New York premiere of “Deadpool 2,” producer Simon Kinberg revealed the status of another highly anticipated film: “Gambit,” starring Channing Tatum.

“We have a script that we love — that Channing loves,” Kinberg told Variety on the red carpet. “We’ve met with a bunch of directors in the last couple of weeks, and we’re hoping to actually pick one in the next couple of weeks and shoot the movie maybe the end of this summer.”

Since 20th Century Fox announced “Gambit,” the project has undergone multiple developmental setbacks. In September 2015, Rupert Wyatt, who was originally slated to direct, left the film due to a timing conflict resulting from a delay in the production schedule. Kinberg addressed the postponement in a 2016 interview.

“I think the truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone,” he said. “‘Deadpool’ feels like it exploded out of nowhere, but it was a 10-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those 10 years.”

Deadpool was the perfect storm of coming out at the right time despite the drawn out process, and having the perfect lead essentially play himself (just like RDJ as Tony Stark)

Channing Tatum ain't no damn gambit :mjlol:

RUMOR: Fox Won’t Let The ‘Gambit’ Movie Just Die And Could Shoot This February In New Orleans

Gambit doesn’t seem to want to die and Fox keeps pushing plans to shoot it even though they’ve been having trouble keeping directors on the project. The latest update we have suggests they want to get things rolling just before the Disney/Fox merger is cemented next summer.

We’ve learned Fox is attempting to get production up and running one more time for February 15th in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Previously, we reported that the film would be shooting at Big Easy Studios. Fox has used the stage locale in the past for projects like Logan and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes.

At one point, they had originally planned on filming last February, then it was delayed to the spring/summer, and then placed on hiatus for an undisclosed time (despite producer Simon Kinberg suggesting a late summer start).

We are a little wary because the film has been moving start dates repeatedly and is without an official director. However, there is now word that they’ve cleared the entire crew starting from scratch which would support this new start date and new crew hires could be coming very soon.

Consider this just a rumor for the time being until something more official is announced.

Fox had originally planned on Gambit being released next summer, but that certainly won’t be happening.

Gambit Movie May Feel Like A Romantic Comedy, Says Producer - IGN

With 20th Century Fox's plans for the X-Men franchise coming under the wire as Disney's purchase is finalized, many fans are wondering if the long-planned, oft-delayed Gambit movie is actually in the works. It turns out that Channing Tatum's superhero movie is not dead yet.

Producer Simon Kinberg recently teased the project's development, revealing a surprising direction for the tone and genre of Gambit that might perplex some fans.

"When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy," Kinberg recently told IGN.

This is a surprising statement from Kinberg, who is the steward of the X-Men franchise as well as the writer and director of X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Given that Gambit has gone through multiple directors — including Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski — and they have yet to get anyone to commit to the project, it's surprising that they're already committed to a direction.

But Kinberg assured that fans shouldn't take too much stock in his statement, as the film will still be an X-Men movie.

"You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely," Kinberg said. "It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are."

Of course, some fans might assume all of these plans could be moot with the impending sale of 20th Century Fox and its intellectual property. Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger has already stated that the Marvel properties currently belonging to Fox, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, will go under the banner of Marvel Studios when the purchase is finalized.

And though that purchase is set to be finalized sometime in the first half of 2019, Kinberg and Fox are moving forward; business as usual.

"Gambit has a great script and we’re looking to start that movie early next year," Kinberg said.

We'll see if it comes together, and we'll find out if Gambit's first solo film will be under the banner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the coming months.
