Much like nukes, people don't understand asteroids.

One nuke is bad. The biggest ones are absolutely terrifying. But to destroy the global environment you'd need to shoot thousands (which the firing of one nuke could trigger, but one bomb by itself is just a mega huge disaster, not the apocalypse).

This asteroid hitting is not a good thing. But it's not gonna wipe us out. Would be fukced up if it hit somewhere important (to global finance, commerce, or political power). But much like huge natural disasters such as earthquakes.

I don't want it to hit. But if it did, that would be almost appropriate considering every other awful thing humans have wrought.
