A former Encinal High School basketball coach suspected of luring her female players into lesbian relationships pleaded not guilty Thursday to criminal charges involving sex with girls under 18 years old.

Tanda Rucker, 30, of Berkeley entered her pleas in the George E. McDonald Hall of Justice after surrendering in open court. Rucker appeared with her Berkeley attorney, Elizabeth Grossman, in an agreement with Deputy District Attorney Kevin Murphy.

detectives had obtained a warrant for Rucker's arrest on 10 counts of penetration with a foreign object and eight counts of oral copulation with minors, according to Lt. Bill Scott.

A conference regarding the litigation is to be held May 3 in an Oakland courtroom. The suit contends Rucker was a "child sexual predator" and the district was maliciously remiss in employing her as an Encinal physical education teacher and girls basketball team coach.

Bonner and Oakland attorney Michael Kinane represent the former students, whose identities were kept anonymous in the suit by identifying each as a "Jane Roe." One of the girls is reportedly from Alameda and the other from Oakland.

Rucker engaged the girls in provocative games, such as trying to kiss vigorously enough in cars to fog the mirrors, Bonner said. Rucker had another game she dubbed "In and Out," according to Bonner.

Rucker won the friendship and trust of the girls, then molested them, according to Sausalito attorney Charles Bonner, who authored the suit.
