What I find interesting is cats like VVD, whom at a distance may not appear to be black in eyes of some individuals, but still openly acknowledges having "African" heritage, yet still gets criticized for apparently not being "black enough".

Yeah, I found it interesting that Black and African are conflated on their census, so when 70% identify as "mulatto," and the 28% identify as Black/African, it's a testament to that history. On the other hand, though, there are no other countries in Africa where the average person has 50% European DNA.

I dont think they had a vested interest. It just happened as a result of the slave trade. Same thing happened everywhere. Prop up light skinned cats over dark skinned ones and use the light skinned people as overseers. After the island became unprofitable though, and the portuguese left alot changed but people still hang on to the various skin tones they identify with. Still, this doesnt effect the people institutionally like it does in countries like Brazil. We get along as a people, to a greater degree then people of African descent in America, who have no nation to identify with. If you dont have a nation state, you're essentially a people without a home which is why Cape Verdeans will first identify as CV before labels that people in America want to assign to us like a simple color.

People in CV know their makeup and wont deny that they are of African descent but when even Africans give you a look like you arent really african you gotta get in where you fit in.

I mean look at Victor Von Doom. He was rejected by Indians so he identifies as black despite the fact his father is an Indian and he looks Indian. Its deep stuff.

I believe there is a reasonable desire for all black people to unify under one as the term "black" but nationalism will often trump that and also the unspoken issue that many people around the world, including africa dont really view extremely light skinned brothas as *black black*. Thats more of an American thing and then again, the rest of the world has a nationality to identify with, not a color.
