Canelo Says Cotto Wanted Bout To Be For Middleweight Belt
WpiP7Hz.jpg

Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 32KOs) was gunning for a career defining opportunity against Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33KOs) for a long time. He says the WBC middleweight championship which Cotto owns was secondary.

Canelo tried to get Cotto in the ring in 2013, 2014 and earlier this year. A deal was eventually reached a few months ago.

Their bout is taking place on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will carry the bout.

There has been some criticism over the fight taking place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds. Cotto, by way of his victory over Sergio Martinez, is the lineal champion of the middleweight division. The winner of the bout has been ordered to face mandatory challenger Gennady "GGG" Golovkin next, but neither fighter wants to face him at the full middleweight limit.

"The fight was agreed to at 155 because neither of us are middleweights. He wanted it to be for his middleweight championship, but at 155," Canelo told ESPN Deportes Radio.

Canelo doesn't give a fukk about that WBC middleweight title so, if Canelo wins, there is no bargaining position for the WBC or Golovkin as far as what the weight would be. I bet Canelo would toss that belt in the garbage without even blinking before he lets WBC officials or the Reigning Concession Stand Sales King dictate terms to him.

If Canelo wins he'll obviously have the upside in negotiations, but they won't make it at 155. Canelo will get the Lions share of the purse, but 157 seems more likely for the fight to be made. Let's also not forget Canelo doesn't have many options after Cotto for a big money fight and we all know he aint going to 154 to fight the Andrade's and Charlos of the World. HBO also is sorta the "silent promoter" and you better believe they're gonna be on Oscar to make that fight like

If GGG turns down 155 it'll be more on Canelo looking like he's ducking, especially if he's not fighting at 154 against those guys. We're gonna know a lot after Nov.

Canelo is a big enough name with a big enough following of devoted Mexican fans that he can survive fighting non-A list guys for a bit if Golovkin tries to play hardball with the negotiations. Plus Canelo's preferred weight is 155 so I don't see any of the dudes at 154 who are hungry for a big money fight balking at the 1 pound increase if promotional issues could be worked out.
I also doubt that Canelo's deal with HBO lets them matchmake for him. They were desperate to steal him from Showtime so he probably has a pretty sweet deal.

They got him from Showtime in the notion that the "rest" of Golden Boy was coming too. But once that Haymon shift happened and the PBC began and all those Golden Boy fighters left, the ball game changed REALLY quick. I'm sure if Canelo beats Cotto, he'll have an easier fight in his comeback, but he and Oscar don't have much wiggle room to fight the Joe Smiths from Wyoming and expect HBO to televise without having some security they're gonna inevitably fight GGG in 2016. Also, HBO are in a sense "silent promoters". Arum recently before May v Pac was talking the same thing about HBO becoming the matchmakers or the ones deciding what they will or won't televise (which has always been the case) and was getting pissed off about it.

I think the one fight that puts GGG to side for a little longer is a Cotto v Canelo rematch that might still make more money depending if it's an action packed fight that ends in controversy and or is really close.

Anybody know the purses for the fight?

They weren't 100% specific but apparently Cotto's lookin at $13-14 Mill with upside close to $20 Mill after PPV Revenue, Canelo I think is in the $8-9 Mill w/ upside of $15 Mill after PPV. Both are making career highs.

BHop:

"I don’t know Cotto’s deal is with Roc Nation,” Hopkins said “I heard its big numbers. I’m not going to dispute it [for Cotto's end], I know Cotto’s very happy. Both of these guys are getting paid what they are supposed to get paid whether it’s 10 million of 15 million. It’s a lot of money. These are big paydays. The split should be 50-50 but worst case Scenario is 60-40."
